Outdoor Skills - Cooking Bannock


Scouter Jim's Bannock

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup margarine or butter
  • 1/2 cup water (almost)

Maddy The Goose's Bannock:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 4 tbsp powdered milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee

Making Oven Bannock

(Using "kitchen" ingredients and a supposed "Native Bannock" recipe.)

Ray Mears cooking bannock while canoing in Canada.

Using dry ingredients of equal parts flour and milk powder, with powdered egg and baking powder added. Great demonstration of cooking on a skillet fireside. The drizzle of rum should, of course, be omitted on Scouting trips!
